Our Story

I’m Simone, creator and developer of Cycle of Sun.

I’m an electrotechnical technician and I work as a specialist in industrial automation.

I have always been involved in the maker community, attending maker fairs and fab labs. I always had a passion for inventions, and my curiosity drives me to discover how things work every day, conducting research and development for new projects, both for work and as a hobby.

I’m Gabriele, a biologist and nature lover who’s always been into cycling.

I joined the Cycle of Sun team because I loved the idea since the very beginning.

I wanted to use my environmental knowledge to make something useful, cool, long-lasting, and good for the planet.

Why this idea?

It all started from the common problems that bike lights have: they’re always dead or malfunctioning when you need them, or they’re powerful but with poor battery life, or vice versa.

Coming back from a business trip to America, during the 13-hour long flight, I started thinking about how to solve this problem. I wanted an automatic system, with good brightness and a good battery.

I didn’t have paper and pen, so I started brainstorming on my phone’s notes. When I got home, after two weeks, with the components arriving, I created the first prototype.

It was a real rough draft, inefficient, and way too pricey: but I wasn’t about to give up! I kept testing, fixing bugs, failing prints, tweaking circuits, and learning on the fly. All the while, I was trying to cut costs to the bare minimum.

After a year of trial and error, failed prototypes, and countless redesigns…

Dopo un anno di prove di circuiti, stampe fallite e diverse modifiche e ripensamenti…

I finally made it!

I had developed an innovative solution, a solar-powered automatic system, to overcome the traditional limitations of bicycle lights.

I realized it was so powerful it could even juice up my phone! Maybe I went a bit overboard with all the tweaks?

I started looking for a commercial product to modify, eventually including a modified front headlight in my kit so I could offer a phone holder and a USB port to charge your smartphone.

And this is where we are now!
